Youth Policy

At acac, we want community members of all ages to feel comfortable enjoying an active, healthy lifestyle- including youth and young adults. In an effort to ensure the safety of and to provide the best possible health and fitness experience for acac members, the following policies will be enforced regarding individuals under the age of 18 using acac’s indoor facilities (acac albemarle Square and acac downtown):

Children using acac at any time, unless they are registered for one of our special youth programs or events or have paid the appropriate guest fee, must be members of the club. Children of members who are not members themselves must pay appropriate guest fees and adhere to our policy for young guests.

Youth Membership Options Young adults 14 to 17 years old may join acac as individuals with a signature of a parent or legal guardian, or be included in a family membership. Children 13 and younger must be part of a family membership.

Under 12 Years of Age: Members under 12 are allowed only on the basketball court, in the indoor aquatic center and on the track at acac during scheduled family time. Family time hours are available here: Albemarle Square - Downtown.

Age 12: We feel that at age 12, a child is ready to begin exercising at acac. However, it is very important for their safety that they be supervised at all times by a parent using the same area of the club.

Before using the fitness equipment (weight training and cardio machines), 12 year-olds are required to complete one training session with a Fitness Specialist. Once completing the training session, the 12 year-old will be given a green wristband that must be worn at all times while in the club. For children who have not completed this training session, the rules for children under 12 apply.

Ages 13 to 15: After completing their training session with a Fitness Specialist, 13-15 year-olds will receive a blue wristband that must be worn at all times while in the club. Teens 13-15 may work out without their parent. acac reserves the right to revoke this privilege if it is determined that a young adult is not adhering to acceptable standards of conduct. If this privilege is withdrawn, the rules for ages 12 apply.

Ages 16 and Up: Members ages 16 + are not required to complete a teen training session to workout in the club. A training session with a Fitness Specialist will be scheduled if requested. Teens 16 + may workout in the club without their parent. acac reserves the right to revoke this privilege if it is determined that a young adult is not adhering to acceptable standards of conduct. If this privilege is withdrawn, the rules for ages 12 apply.
